Agriculture×River×Children

1. MASTER PLAN

We planned to establish the Agriculture Experience School in the east side of Misi. Children live in the urban area come to this school to take part in extracurricular activities like agriculture experience once a year.

We found out three attractive points in Misi. One is in front of a mosque. In this area, the bazaar is held once a week. The other one is picnic area in the north area of the village. People come to this area for picnic on holidays. The last one is riverbank. There is cool breeze and trees all year around. In the riverbank, there are comfortable arbor under trees.

We feel Misi already has so attractive potential. We have to draw out the potential to be useful for all users. What we have to do is to create some architectures for connecting these attractive areas each other.

2.DESIGN AREA

We designed the east side of Misi to develop the village. We designed to renovate four buildings to the other functions such as a dormitory, a school, a library and a bazaar center, based on our concept.
We arranged the library, the school and the bazaar center along the river ("Riverside Architectures"). On the other hand, the dormitory is arranged in the center of the plaza.
We intended to draw out children who stay in the dormitory to the riverside area through the "Riverside Architectures" by this arrangement. And this "Riverside Architectures" are useful to invite the visitors who come to the attractive areas on holidays. It is functional arrangement as the buffer zone for visitors to come into the central plaza area.

1.RESEARCH & CONCEPT

Bursa has some large farmlands, so we must create a new alternative agricultural identity of Misi which is different from the other surrounding farmlands. We recognized Misi as a piece of the large Bursa city. And we propose to give Misi a part of unique urban function…"celebration". People consume some "celebrations" one after another in the central city, but Misi can preserve and accumulate their "celebrations" there.

2.MASTER PLAN

We observed the historical road and landscape and Misi’s human activities. We distributed the celebrational programs such as flower gardens, a ceremony hall and so on along the celebration axis which is penetrating from the south-west area to the north-east area.

3.ARRANGEMENT

This is the 1st floor plan. Our designed buildings create one street, three small squares, the central square, flower garden and vineyard. Each buildings are related each other.

4.PERCEPECTIVE_01

This is a perspective from flower garden to central street.

5.PERCEPECTIVE_02

This is a perspective of the curtain architecture. Moving curtains celebrate human activities.

1.CONCEPT & PROPOSAL
We propose to lend some vacant houses and abandoned farms to urban people who live in center of the Bursa city.

We propose two styles of farming system considering some new lifestyles. The two are "Garden type" and "Instant farming type".

We mainly designed the "Garden type" area figured in the left-bottom side. We guess that vacant houses will have been increasing in this district. So, we propose that we will gradually restore these vacant houses to be some rental houses for urban people, when some houses will become vacant. We expect that this "Garden type" farming area will spread in the future.

2.CASE STUDY (SYSTEM & DETAILS)
This is about our case studied and designed area. We thought three elements, the agricultural facility, the Utility and the Facilities for farmer and visitor, are indispensable for this proposal.

And, we made the system below to design this "Garden type" farming.
All "Garden type" areas are designed by the system.

For example, when this system is applied in this area, it becomes like the figure below.

There are 5 entrances which are near the empty houses. These entrances function as visitor centers for visitors.

In the final presentation, It was pointed out that this model and this figure didn't indicate what we thought.

We had to think how to make the model and the figure more.

Art In Residence

■Concept
We choose to develop every empty houses and small points that is not used effectively.
First, we choose 4 areas that empty houses are gathered in various rules.
Second, we choose 4 small points that have high potential. For example, the hill where the view is good, the garden enclosed by many trees and so on.
Third, As a little devices we choose many smaller points. For example that is the corner on road, the points that has view of wide field and so on.
By developing several characteristic and small points, we create the new flow on the present structure of Misi.

■Master plan
We choose "Artist In Residence" program for this method.
Artist In Residence program is the business that invite artists for a certain period, and supports the activity under the stay. Artists can create site specific art works and do workshop with residents of Misi and visiter to Misi.
We apply main functions such as Residence for artist ,studio ,workshop space and information center to empty houses areas.
And we apply some functions such as gallery, parking, Open-air stage, warehouse and so on.
At the end we apply little devices such as bench, art works and scheme of sign to many smaller points.

■Information center (Sanada Natsura)
Information center located in the Misi's entrance.

■Residence, Atelier, Lecture space for residents (Tanabu Kaori)
Residence and studio located on the street.

■Residence, Atelier, Workshop space, Wood work studio (Ishii Yuki)
Residence and studio, converted from an empty houses that surrounding square.
Inserted a modern glass void to traditional mass housing.
So glass void are blended into the village, but clearly seen as a change.
By making a difference also emerges misi's original attraction, and it can shed light on again.

■Gallery (Yamabi Kohei)
This place is wide courtyard where is enclosed by many trees and the points of intersection of 4 roads.
So I design the gallery that takes flows of 4 roads.
The wall generated by making the plane on the slope is bent along the flow of roads.
And outsides decks and internal spaces are continuously connected.
In designing like this, the relationship between this point and other points, between this gallery and 4 roads connected to the gallery, and between inside and outside is kept continuously.

■At the end:
We do small scale renovations and design small scale new buildings with making the most of potentialitys that every places have.
We create new flow on the present structure of misi and design new layer for Artist In Residence program.
As a result, residents of misi, visitor to misi and artists who come to misi become one and form the active village.

Mega Village

Misi has two problems. First, 77% of agricultural fields and vineyards are not used efficiently.
Second, Agricultural workers are short in Misi. So we found it is impossible to develop Misi's agricultural business independently. Furthermore, there are three smaller villages in the south area of Misi. We thought if Misi would be developed independently, three villages would be declined.

So we propose to make four villages agricultural developing network system called "MEGA VILLAGE". When we analyzed the connection of Misi and central Bursa, Misi and three villages, we found Misi has the potential to be four villages' hub. So we planned to develop Misi as the central of four villages' network. We propose that three south villages grow crops and transport them to Misi. Misi processes crops and ships them to central Bursa.

(Process_01)
We planed the east of Misi as MEGA VILLAGE's center. We divided east of Misi into three areas. They are industrial area, connecting area and saving buildings area. We mainly designed industrial area and connecting area.
Shusuke Ohashi designed "Processing factory" in the industrial area.
Yoshitake Sasai designed "Agricultural school and olives factory" in the connecting area.
Tatsuro Ueno designed "Guest house and timber yard" in the connecting area.

(Process_02)
We draw two new roads from south villages to the central of "MEGA VILLAGE". We also draw roads to central Bursa from the central MEGA VILLAGE like green lines.

(Process_03)
There are two interesting places in Misi. We draw new pedestrian roads like blue line to connect two spots.

(Process_04)
Finally, we planned main plaza at the center of these areas. Four villages' people and tourists gather in the main plaza.

This is our master plan. We strongly designed industrial area and connecting area. MEGA VILLAGE’s buildings are influenced by each other.

In the case of the other village’s farmers, they come here for carrying and shipping crops. After that, they enjoy teaching farmer techniques in agriculture school.
In the case of agriculture students, they can study professional skills in Mega factory. And they can take a rest or stay in Guest house after their studying.
In the case of tourists, they can see some activities on sightseeing road of MEGA VILLAGE’s buildings. And they enjoy shopping and have rest in the Mega plaza.

This architecture employs big roof and long louvers. They connect agriculture school and small olive factory. And, they make horizontal line toward Mega plaza.
Agriculture students and tourists can experience farm work and processing olives.
After work, they can taste olives at the wood deck cafe and have a fine Mega plaza's view.

In processing factory people work and process crops. This architecture consists of BIG ROOF and THE FOUNDATION. In THE FOUNDATION, there is main food processing area.
On THE ROOF, there is concourse for visitor.

This architecture is guest house and timber yard for tourists and four village's people. The architecture consists of the walls, the floating volumes and outside space. The strong walls float the volumes by the structure of cantilever beam. The all volumes except staircases are floating and the volumes create light and shadow. Tourists and four villages' people enjoy and relax under the volumes. The people can experience the bazaar under the shadow and processing woods. Moreover, the wood cafe and relaxation rooms give processing factory's workers and agricultural students healing.

These are our architecture and MEGA plaza's perspective.
We think MEGA VILLAGE's project will be a solution of agriculture problems and shortage worker’s problems at the points below. First, We make new employment opportunities for four village's people at Misi village.
Second, This system can improve the economy more than now.
For example, four village's people eat lunch and enjoy shopping after work, we expect new communication and new business will occur at Misi.
Third, this place will be a hot spot of Misi by some new communications and new businesses.
Finally, Misi will be a new attractive place of business and sightseeing.

Thank you very much for all the people participated in this FINAL REVIEW in Sendai.
